Canopic jar

Ptolemaic period (305-30 BC)
Alabaster
Height: 58 cm
Inv.: MEB E-1272

Canopic jars were used to hold the viscera of the deceased, which were removed during the mummification process. They represented the four sons of Horus and were associated with a specific organ, a protective deity and a cardinal point. In this case, the deity represented is Amset, linked to the south, the liver and the goddess Isis.
