The Clos Archaeological Foundation was established in 1992 with the aim of sharing knowledge about the cultures of Antiquity, and especially Egyptian civilization. It carries out its activities around the conservation and dissemination of a unique collection of pharaonic art in Spain, guided by the values of quality, excellence and a service vocation to create a positive impact on the wider public.
Our commitment
ECONOMIC RESPONSIBILITY
Creation of value for the community
As a non-profit organization, all the value generated by the Foundation through its activity and collaborations is returned to society. Our economic contribution to society is reflected in:
-Maintenance and creation of quality employment, through the hiring of staff at the museum and collaboration with local suppliers.
-Staff training, promoting their personal and professional development and equipping them to carry out their duties in a way that meets the needs of each audience.
-Contribution to the presence of archaeological heritage of ancient Egypt in Spain and ensuring its conservation and enhancement for the use and enjoyment of future generations.
-Expansion, through study, research and dissemination of existing scientific knowledge about pharaonic culture, art and archaeology.
-Organization of cultural and educational activities that introduce the art of ancient Egypt and promote the values of cultural diversity among citizens.
-Creation of value for sponsors, through their visibility both in the museum and in organized activities and the media.
-Contribution to public administrations through taxation.
Commitment to quality
The Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, born from a private collection of the highest rank in Europe, is deeply committed to the promotion and dissemination of art and archaeology in general, especially that of ancient Egypt. To achieve this, in both the development of our activity and public service we are guided by the values of quality, excellence and a vocation for service.
We pay special attention to the expansion, conservation, restoration and research of the collection's items. In this regard, the Museum has more than 1,300 original items and 10,000 documents in our Library, a fundamental tool for specialists. In addition, through scientific research and publishing work we contribute to the dissemination of Egyptology.
Together with the exhibition of the permanent collection and the organization of temporary exhibitions, we carry out a large number of activities to enliven the content and allow audiences to expand their knowledge. These activities take place in different formats: from guided tours (daytime and nighttime), to training courses for adults, and children and youth workshops, family activities, etc.
The Foundation carries out some of these activities at the headquarters of the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, but also in the facilities of the Archaeological Campus (located in Palau-solità and Plegamans).
The Museum facilities are adapted to ensure accessibility for people with reduced mobility. In addition, we provide an audio guide that offers new digital content in four languages (Catalan, Spanish, French and English).
Accountability
Integrity and transparency are core values of the Foundation.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Foundation develops several specific programs of great importance for pedagogical training and social cooperation.
Access to Egyptology Education Program
Introducing children to the knowledge of ancient Egyptian civilization has been one of our top priorities. For this reason we offer a comprehensive Educational Program aimed at nursery, primary and secondary schools. Our educational program holds the Educational Quality Seal from the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) / Pedagogical Coordination Council and is designed to instill respect and sensitivity for the cultural heritage of humanity and to promote teamwork among young children.
The Clos Archaeological Foundation awards 500 scholarships per academic year to schools in the city of Barcelona with limited resources so they can take part in guided visits and workshops at the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona. The program is carried out in collaboration with the Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona (IMEB), which determines the suitability of the school to benefit from the scholarships. The Foundation also awards scholarships to all students of the municipality of Plau Solità i Plegamans for participation in archaeology and Egyptology workshops at the Archaeological Campus located in that town.
Social Cooperation Program: UPUAUT Project for social integration through culture
The Upuaut Project seeks to make the educational content about ancient Egypt from the guided visits and Egyptology workshops at the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona accessible to associations and foundations recognized by the Generalitat of Catalonia that provide services and reception to people with intellectual or physical disabilities or people at risk of social exclusion. Over the past five years, a total of 53 associations have requested these services, enabling a large number of people to participate in the Museum’s activities and engage with Egyptian culture.
Program for the recovery, restoration and enhancement of Pharaonic archaeological heritage
The Clos Archaeological Foundation carries out an archaeological research project in Egypt for excavations and restoration of monuments in the necropolis of Kom al-Ahmar, Sharuna, in Middle Egypt. This project enables the recovery, restoration and enhancement of an area highly affected by the indiscriminate looting of the cultural and artistic heritage of ancient Egypt. The project is a collaboration with the University of Tübingen (Germany) and the Ministry of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Efficiency in planning, management and service delivery
The museum designs and develops its exhibitions and activities sustainably. To achieve this, it follows criteria to control and reduce consumption, always seeking optimization of spaces and materials.
We follow ecological criteria when purchasing office products and strive to work with local suppliers with the dual aim of contributing to community development and avoiding CO₂ emissions.
We promote efficient use of resources among our visitors and staff through informative signs and training.
Energy efficiency
The museum is equipped with technologies and tools that enable efficient use and savings of energy and resources, without compromising the conservation and good condition of collection items.
At the lighting level, 99% of devices meet energy rating B or higher. The system allows only the lights needed for the exhibition to be switched on, and the museum rooms have motion sensors that keep lights on only when necessary. Exterior lighting points have energy-saving devices with timed programming.
The building has double-glazed windows that improve thermal insulation. The climate control systems are zoned so that the temperature can be regulated according to the use of the space. Boiler performance is checked annually to verify efficiency above 85%.
In terms of technology, our office equipment is Energy Star certified.
Minimising resource consumption
The museum carries out actions to promote the reduction of resource consumption, the extension of their useful life and their recycling.
The acquisition of new materials is carried out based on need, ease of maintenance, expected lifespan and potential for reuse. We encourage the reuse of materials for activities and exhibitions.
We have implemented a dematerialization policy for communications and use recycled paper.
In response to our commitment to the environment, and at the request of a large part of our students, didactic and academic materials related to courses and seminars (handouts, exercises, reading articles, etc.) are not printed but sent by email. Actions like this undoubtedly help make our planet more sustainable.
