Kohl (mesmedet in Egyptian) was applied with sticks around the eyes to protect them from the sun, sand and wind; it was also a good remedy for treating ophthalmia. In the New Kingdom, the most common containers were cylindrical in shape (one or more tubes) and were made of wood, faience, glass or stone.
