Spells of Coming Forth by Day. The book of Dead of ancient Egyptians presents one of the most important documents that have come down to us from the ancient Egyptians. A religious text of fundamental importance as it is a kind of guide and aid for all those who aspired to a full life after earthly death.
The ancient Egyptians believed in the possibility of an afterlife. To achieve this, among other creations, they devised veritable "manuals" with the necessary texts and images. Following the tradition of the Pyramid Texts in the Old Kingdom and the Coffin Texts during the Middle Kingdom, from the New Kingdom until the end of the Pharaonic civilization, the Book of the Dead, or Book of Coming Forth by Day, was the most widely used compendium of religious ideas for resolving questions about life in the afterlife.
There are numerous copies of the Book of the Dead, usually written on papyrus, which combine text and images and consist of varying numbers of the approximately 200 known formulas. This complex work has been approached by scholars from different perspectives (both more and less academic), and we aim to make it accessible to our audience by highlighting its essential and most defining aspects.
The exhibition Spells of Coming Forth by Day. The book of Dead of ancient Egyptians consists of seventy pieces from the permanent collection of the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona and documents from the Jordi Clos Llombart Library.
